Are there glaciers in Colombia? (2021)

In Are there glaciers in Colombia? I used the conditions of my current location, the city of Boston, to address a concerning environmental issue happening thousands of miles away: the melting glaciers in Colombia. This piece comprised both a public video projection and a simultaneous performance.

In this work, a photograph of the Tolima volcano, one of the few Colombian mountains with remaining glaciers, is projected onto a pile of snow, serving as both a screen and a physical representation of a mountain. Then, a performer is instructed to destroy the pile of snow as thoroughly as possible.

The work is built upon the premise that human activity is directly linked to the disappearance of tropical glaciers. Through the fast and aggressive performance, I aim to highlight the idea of violence in how we perceive human actions on the land.
