Sweeping bacteria (2021)

Sweeping bacteria was a public art collaboration with the artist Jesús Pizarro.

In August 2020, the Boston Public Garden Lagoon had to be drained due to an overgrowth of algae and elevated levels of toxic bacteria in the water, making it unsafe for wildlife. The unusual hot and dry weather, along with a lack of water turbulence, were the main factors contributing to the bacterial growth. In April, 2021, as an (ironic) act of public service, we swept the dry lagoon. This performance served as a means to prompt reflection on people's roles in the environmental crisis, the effectiveness or futility of our actions, and society's approach to addressing climate change. We had the collaboration of other artists and colleagues who joined us in the performance.

Sweeping bacteria was featured in the exhibition 2021 MFA Spring Thesis at MassArt X SoWa.
